Westchester Tops Volleyball In 5 Sets
Valhalla, NY - The RVCC Women's volleyball team took the first set, the third, but couldn't take the fifth and lost to the host Vikings 3-2 on Tuesday night. The Lions were led by Emma Kovacs' 15 kills while Ra-Yanah Brown-Smith and Nyah Hermann each contributed 7 on the night. Amaya Wilson and Ana Martinez Sanz finished the night with 6 and 4 kills respectively. Alaina Munday controlled the offense with a season high 37 assists while Avalyn Stayskal led the team with 15 digs. Kovacs racked up another double-double as she had 12 digs to go along with her team leading 15 kills.
The Lions took the first set pretty easily, only to find themselves down by 9 points early in the second frame. The late rally wouldn't be enough as Westchester's lead was too big to come back from. However, in the third stanza the Lions fought off 4 different set points to win a gritty 31-29 set that gave them a 3-2 lead. Serve receive once again proved to be a problem for the Lions in the fourth and fifth sets, but they still managed to stay within striking distance.
The two teams will face each other again on Thursday at 6 PM, this time in RVCC's gymnasium. The Lions are currently 7-11 on the year and 5-3 in Region XIX play.
