Women's Basketball Beats Salem
North Branch, NJ - The RVCC Women's Basketball Team won their Region XIX Matchup on Saturday against Salem County Community College by a final score of 65-45. The Lions had three starters in double figures with Maria Eguizabal Ruales leading the way with 20 points on the afternoon. She connected on a team high 4 three pointers en route to her 4th 20 point performance on the season. Julia Solé Pons was second on the team in scoring with 12 points to compliment her team high 7 assists. Elizabeth May finished the afternoon with 11 points and 10 boards, to collect her first double double of the season. Fellow sophomore, Telma Comba, almost registered a double double of her own as she finished just a point shy and tied May with 10 boards. The Lions got great production off the bench as Paula Aguilera Ortega and Jayla McNeil finished with 8 and 4 points respectively. The Lions were dominant on the glass, finishing with 57 total rebounds for the game. Every single Lion finished with at least 5 rebounds with Aviva Palms grabbing 8 and Saionni Patrick finishing with 6.
After being up just two at half, the Lions were tied at 34 a piece midway through the third quarter. A big rebound by Jayla McNeil that started the Lions in transition led to an Eguizabal Ruales three. On the next play a steal by Solé Pons and assist to a streaking Eguizabal Ruales helped the Lions go on a small run to start separating themselves from the Mighty Oaks. The Lions are currently 3-5 on the season and will next face the Titans from County College of Morris on Monday night at 5 PM.
