Lions Beat Howard In Season Opener
Rockville Center, MD - The RVCC Women's Basketball team defeated Howard County Community College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 73-55. This was the Lions' first game of the year, compared to the sixth for the Dragons. The Lions are now off to a 1-0 start while the Dragons fall to 3-3.
The Lions came out of the gate with a lead built behind three pointers from the trio of Maria Eguizabal Ruales, Elizabeth May, and Ona Riopedre. After the first quarter the Lions held a 22-12 lead and never looked back. The Lions extended the lead to over 24 points in the third quarter, but Howard was able to cut it to under 15 with just 5 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. A transition layup by Eguizabal Ruales and an And-One by Aviva Palms helped the Lions keep the Dragons at bay.
In her first collegiate game Eguizabal Ruales led the Lions with 22 points while shooting a blistering 80% from deep. Not to be outdone, sophomore Ona Riopedre, also finished 4-5 from behind the arc in route to 19 total points. Riopedre also led the team with 8 boards. Elizabeth May was the only other Lion in double digits as she finished with 11 points. The Lions were able to win the rebound battle as every member of the team finished with at least 2 rebounds with Palms finishing right behind Riopedre with 7 boards to go along with her 7 points.
