Marcos Hallo Wins Athletic Logo Contest
Somerville, NJ—Raritan Valley Community College Athletics hosted an open contest on campus for a new school logo. The Golden Lions are the mascot of RVCC and students got involved to showcase their artistic talents and vision for the college’s mascot. The contest was held in the Fall 2011 semester, and students of John Harford’s Graphic Design II Class completed a design for the logo as part of their in class assignments. The contest was also open to the general student-body.
The winning Golden Lion logo was submitted by Marcos Hallo, a resident of Bridgewater, NJ and graduate from Bridgewater-Raritan High School. Hallo moved to the United States from his home country of Ecuador when he was fifteen years old. Continuing his education was always an important goal for Hallo but when he attended RVCC he was unsure of what he wanted to study. “I’ve always enjoyed art and I have always been good with computers,” Hallo said. After his first semester at RVCC, Hallo declared Graphic Design as his Major and will be graduating with his AA this May.
When Amanda V. DeMartino, Director of Athletics presented the project to the Graphic Design II class, Marcos immediately became inspired and excited about the assignment. “We have many talented students on our campus. We decided that the College needed a fresh and uniform logo not just for the athletic programs but for the college as a whole, and we decided who better to get involved in the creative process than the students on our own campus,” DeMartino said.
As Marcos began the project, he researched various sports logos of high school, collegiate and professional levels. “The one thing I noticed about all the logos I like best, was that they were all fairly simple designs,” said Hello, and I kept this in mind when creating my version of the Golden Lion.
The submissions were displayed on a bulletin board in the main lobo of the Physical Education Building, where the Athletic Department is located. The logos were voted on by a panel of staff and student judges. The new Golden Lion is on display throughout campus locations, as well as our athletic website.
