RVCC took the field Wednesday, March 20th looking to record their first victory of the season and they did just that splitting a doubleheader with Holyoke Community College. Following a 8-0 loss in the first game of the doubleheader which saw the Lions commit 5 errors and strike-out 14 times as a team, RVCC shook off the loss and came out aggressive in the second game. After starter Devin Zimmerman(Freshman, Union, NJ) threw a scoreless top half of the 1st inning, the first of four consecutive scoreless innings to start the game for the lefty, the Lions starting centerfielder Steven Gonzalez(Freshman, Union City, NJ) led of the bottom half the 1st with a solid single to get the offense rolling. Following a two-out walk for Justin Young(Sophomore, Branchburg, NJ), the Lions Neil Costanzo(Sophomore, Raritan, NJ) stepped up to the plate with two on and two out and promptly ripped a 2-run double to give RVCC an early 2-0 lead. The Lions would tack on to their lead in the 3rd and 4th innings with RBIs from Omar Lewis(Freshman, Newark, NJ) and Thomas Tutka(Sophomore, Belvidere, NJ) and pushed their tead to 4-0. After Holyoke pushed across 2 runs in the 5th inning, the Lions turned to their closer Peter Mayer(Sophomore, Alexandria, NJ) in the top of the 6th as he seeked out his first save of the season. The righty from Alexandria did not dissapoint as threw 2 scoreless innings securing his first save and the Lions first victory of the season.
With the win, the Lions improve to 1-3 overall on the season and will return to the field on Thursday, March 21st when they host Union CC at Diamond Nation with first pitch slated for 3:30PM.
