Cranford, NJ – The RVCC Lions Volleyball team earned a regular season series sweep against Union County College on Saturday as the beat the Owls 25-15, 25-17, 25-15. The Lions haven’t lost a set to the Owls in their last 5 match ups. With the win the Lions clinched their second straight Garden State Athletic Conference Championship.
The first set saw the teams trading blows back and forth until the score was tied at 7 a piece. From there, Sophomore RS Steph Seymour earned 6 straight service points, including 2 Service Aces, to give the Lions the separation they needed. While the Lions did get 8 kills from Chandra Ramlogan and 6 from Bryahna Shaw, it was there serving that helped them win the game. Setter, Tess Rogovin, had a game high 7 Service Aces to go along with her 17 assists and DS Anais Duarte recorded 4 Service Aces of her own. Rogovin currently sits at 7th in the NJCAA Division III rankings with 1.42 SA/Set and Duarte isn’t far behind at 11th with 1.29 SA/Set. The defense was once again paced by Freshman Libero, Andrea Chavez, who had 8 digs during the game.
The win moved the Lions to the top of the Garden State Athletic Conference with an 11-1 overall record thus far. Mathematically, the Lions won sole possession of the Garden State Athletic Conference Championship, even with one conference game left to play. This marks the first time in school history a women’s program has won back to back Conference Championships, with the other GSAC Championship coming by way of the Women’s Cross Country team in 1992. This is the first back to back GSAC Championship for RVCC since the men’s soccer team accomplished the feat during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
The Lions host RCGC on Tuesday, October 09, 2018 for their final GSAC game of the season.
